San Pedro de Macoris was founded in 19th century by Cubans. They brought their extensive sugar cane farming knowledge and contributed to making the sugar industry the most important economic activity in this area. A drop in sugar prices and destruction from Hurricane Georges in 1998 has seen the city fall into decline.
San Pedro de Macoris is on the southern coast, 75km east of Santo Domingo and 45km east of the International Airport of “Las Americas” (SDQ), and has 140,000 inhabitants.
San Pedro de Macoris is well known as the birthplace of a disproportionate number of professional baseball players. According to Baseball-Reference, 76 players in Major League Baseball history were born in San Pedro de Macoris. The city is often referred to as “The Cradle of Shortstops.”
